Minimal and Maximal Product Differentiation in Hotelling's Duopoly

چکیده

Hotelling’s (1929) model of duopolistic competition ts re-examined. A family of utility functions is used which has as a special case Hotelling’s original utility function. In a two-stage location-price game it is shown that an equilibrium exists when the curvature of the utility functions in the space of characteristics is sufficiently high. The (subgame-perfect) equilibrium never exhibits minimum product differentiation. On the other hand, not all equilibria are at maximal product differentiation.

Hotelling's "Main Street" with more than two Competitors

I analyze oligopolistic competition among three or more firms located on Hotelling's (1929) Main Srreet and show that in contrast with Hotelling's duopoly, the symmetric locational structure supports a noncooperative equilibrium in prices. However, in a two-stage game of location choice in the first stage, and price choice in the second stage, there exists no subgame-perfect equilibrium where t...

Quality Variations a N D Maximal Variety Differentiation*

We allow quality variations in a duopoly of locationally differentiated products a-la-Hotelling (1929). We analyze the impact of quality variations on the choices of the varieties produced. We show that in a sequential game of variety choice and subsequent quality and price choice there exist only maximal variety differentiation equilibria in pure strategies. Maximal variety differentiation is ...

Horizontal Product Differentiation in Bertrand and Cournot Duopoly: the Bertrand Paradox Revisited and Comparative Competitiveness

This paper provides a simple model of endogenous horizontal product differentiation that has two important implications. First, the model can explain the “empirical Bertrand paradox” – the failure to observe homogeneous product Bertrand oligopoly. If product differentiation is possible at reasonable cost, then Bertrand firms would always invest in product differentiation. Using a quadratic util...

www.econstor.eu Product Differentiation and Competitive Selection

By studying the effect of different patterns of demand in an evolutionary selection model this paper shows how product differentiation reduces competitive selection pressure and thus increases the chances for the coexistence of firms. With the example of a duopoly it shows that: (1) a monopoly is the likely outcome of competition in homogeneous products, (2) although product differentiation doe...

Bidimensional vertical differentiation☆

a r t i c l e i n f o In markets where product quality is important, more than one characteristic is usually necessary for producers to define product quality. Standard theory maintains that: (i) in a duopoly there will be a quality leader no matter whether the product can incorporate one or two vertical attributes; (ii) differentiation pertains only to one attribute. By contrast, in our setup ...
